Jolly Anglers SignOn 16th June 2009, the Jolly Anglers pub in Newtown, Reading, was suddenly closed down, having been sold by its owners, Enterprise Inns, to be turned into flats.

As well as the loss of a historic canal-side building in the heart of the community, what really upsets us is that the pub was (and is) financially viable, in a thriving area, with little competition and a huge amount of passing trade. Even worse, the sale was behind closed doors, denying the community or another operator the chance to buy the freehold.

If enough local people show that they don’t want the pub to go, Reading Borough Council will not give permission for change of use, and we might be able to persuade the current owner to reopen or sell the pub. We’ve already had a huge amount of media coverage and support, including from the 80 MP All-Party Parliamentary Save The Pub Group.

With your help we can stop this pub being destroyed. Please take some time to read about the pub, about the campaign, how you can show your support  or just take a look at some photos of the pub.
